    Description

    Historic Space Exploration Photo!
Laika the Space Dog, became the first living Earth-born creature (other than microbes) to orbit Earth aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. She was a stray mongrel dog from the streets of Moscow.
The American media dubbed her "Muttnik", making a play-on-words for the canine follow-on to the first orbital mission, Sputnik. Sadly, she died between five and seven hours into the flight from stress and overheating.
